Why a Name Is Not for Sale
Search almost anyone's name and you will find pages that claim to know where they live, who their relatives are, and what their phone number is. Most of those people never agreed to any of it.
These listings come from data brokers: companies that buy, scrape, and combine records, then sell the result. The profiles are often wrong. Even when they are right, they hand a stranger everything needed to find someone, impersonate them, or target them.
For anyone who has served in uniform or in government, the risk is sharper. A detailed profile of a veteran or a public servant is useful to people who should never have it.
There is good news. A growing number of states now give consumers the legal right to see what a company holds about them and to have it deleted. Brokers are required to honor those requests. Most will not volunteer to. Making the request, in writing and on the record, is the first step.
A name belongs to the person who carries it. It should not be inventory.
